Write it down before you move

The Ra Contact is remembered for a method rather than a meaning — record it immediately, before the ordinary mind returns. The sessions also contain a real description of dreaming, which this essay previously left unquoted.

Readers who come to this material hoping for a chapter on dreams are usually disappointed, and the reason is in how the sessions were made. The Ra Contact was recorded in ninety-minute sittings with a questioner who had specific interests, and dreams were not among them for most of the contact. When he does raise them, late in the sequence, he asks a practical question: whether a person can expect to remember what they dreamed.

The answer is the whole of the material’s dream instruction, and it is about training rather than about meaning. The material’s dream description is a different and much larger thing, and this essay previously implied it was small by never quoting any of it. Here is what it actually says.

Asked to define dreaming, the contact answers:

Dreaming is an activity of communication through the veil of the unconscious mind and the conscious mind. The nature of this activity is wholly dependent upon the situation regarding the energy center blockages, activations, and crystallizations of a given mind/body/spirit complex. In one who is blocked at two of the three lower energy centers dreaming will be of value in the polarization process in that there will be a repetition of those portions of recent catalyst as well as deeper-held blockages, thereby giving the waking mind clues as to the nature of these blockages and hints as to possible changes in perception which may lead to the unblocking.

And asked what dreaming is for beyond polarization, it names two functions:

The activity of dreaming is an activity in which there is made a finely wrought and excellently fashioned bridge from conscious to unconscious. In this state the various distortions which have occurred in the energy web of the body complex, due to the misprecision with which energy influxes have been received, are healed. With the proper amount of dreaming comes the healing of these distortions. Continued lack of this possibility can cause seriously distorted mind/body/spirit complexes. The other function of the dreaming which is of aid is that type of dream which is visionary and which prophets and mystics have experienced from days of old. Their visions come through the roots of mind and speak to a hungry world. Thus the dream is of service without being of a personally polarizing nature. However, in that mystic or prophet [who] desires to serve, such service will increase the entity’s polarity.

A finely wrought bridge from conscious to unconscious, and a means of clearing distortions in the energy web. That is a considerably larger claim than “record it immediately,” and it comes from the same corpus, in the same voice, in the same sessions. The method and the description were never in tension — this essay had quoted one of them and let the other go unmentioned.

The method is recording, immediately

This faculty may be learned by virtue of a discipline of the recording immediately upon awakening of each and every detail which can be recalled.

Immediately upon awakening. Not later, not once the day has started, not in a note taken after breakfast. The material’s claim is that recall is a faculty, that the faculty is trained by use, and that the recording has to happen before the ordinary mind reasserts itself. It says in the same answer that the usual state of affairs is a perception that is muddied, muddled, and quickly lost.

Anyone who has tried it knows the experience the sentence is describing. The dream is vivid for perhaps twenty seconds, and then a thought arrives, and the thing is gone, and no amount of effort brings it back. The material’s instruction is essentially a race against that moment, and it is the same instruction that every serious tradition of dream practice gives independently.

The essay's whole instruction, drawn as the race it is. The dream is vivid, and then a thought arrives, and the thing is gone, and no amount of effort brings it back — so the record has to land in the window between those two moments, which is why the material says immediately upon awakening rather than later, or once the day has started, or in a note taken after breakfast. The line fades rather than ending at a mark, because the material gives no duration: twenty seconds is one reader's honest estimate, not a measurement, and the drawing marks the shape of the loss rather than its length. Recall, the material says, is a faculty trained by use. This community's method follows from that and nothing else — a notebook at the bedside, fragments and single images and a feeling with no scene attached all count, because the discipline is in the recording and not in the quality of what gets recorded. And what is recorded is not interpreted: the material gives no technique for what a dream means, and this community does not tell each other what theirs means, because a confident reading from outside arrives with far more authority than it deserves.

That is the case for a journal, and it is the only piece of equipment we recommend here. A notebook and a pen at the bedside, or a phone in flight mode with a notes app open. The record does not have to be good writing. Fragments, single images, a feeling with no scene attached to it, all count, and the discipline is in the recording rather than in the quality of what gets recorded.

What the material is and is not claiming

The material treats the dream as work the mind does rather than as noise, and our reading of the contact is that this is a background assumption rather than a developed teaching. It does not give a technique for interpretation, and it does not tell the questioner what his dreams mean. That absence is instructive in itself, and it shapes how this community handles the subject.

We do not interpret each other’s dreams. Not in sessions, and not in the channel. It is one of the easiest ways to do real harm while feeling helpful, because a dream is the one place where a person’s own material is closest to the surface and a confident reading from outside arrives with far more authority than it deserves. If you bring a dream to a session, the room can hold it, and somebody may say what it brings up for them. Nobody will tell you what it means.

The same territory in a vocabulary we already have

Indian philosophy has a long and precise account of this, and it gives a reader handles the material does not provide.

Vedanta describes four states of the self. Jagrat (जाग्रत्) is the waking state. Svapna (स्वप्न) is the dream state, in which the mind is said to be its own world, having withdrawn from the senses and constructing its experience from what it carries. Sushupti (सुषुप्ति) is deep sleep, without objects. Turiya (तुरीय) is the fourth, the witness that is said to be present through all three. The point of the framework is not that dreams predict anything. It is that the dream state is a state of the self rather than an absence of one, which is a claim the material’s own account of the mind complex is broadly compatible with.

We hold the two alongside each other and do not merge them. They are answering slightly different questions, and a reader is better served by seeing both.

A caution about subtle experience

Practices that work in the subtle domain, dreaming among them, have a characteristic that is usually left unsaid. Vivid, meaningful, occasionally overwhelming inner experience can arrive long before the psychological work that would let a person integrate it, and the experience does not come with a warning label attached. A person can become very fluent in the terrain of their own mind while the patterns that run their ordinary life remain untouched. It is a documented failure mode of serious practitioners in every tradition, not a fragility specific to anyone reading this.

So we treat a dream practice as one domain among three rather than as a route to the others. If what you meet in a dream practice is heavy, the right room has a professional in it, and this community is not that room. The community page states that boundary in full.

What is left is a small discipline and a long horizon. Write it down before you move. Notice what recurs over months rather than what seems significant on a single night. And treat the whole thing the way the material treats it, as training, which is to say as something that has no end and no examination.
