The rays are directions, not beings

Almost everybody arrives at this material carrying a diagram of seven luminous figures standing in a column, and that diagram is wrong in a way worth the cost of saying out loud. A ray here is a direction of one energy, not a presence that receives it, and the corpus is specific enough about the difference to be checked.

There is a diagram of this material that nearly everyone carries in their head before opening a transcript. Seven luminous figures stand in a column. Each governs a colour, a virtue, a temperament, a kind of person. The sixth is the gateway. The seventh sits above the sixth, faint, and it is the one people reach for. You have met it in diagrams. You may have met it in a room. I want to argue that the ray in this corpus is a direction, and that everything the picture needs in order to be a picture is supplied by the reader rather than found in the text. The claim is narrow and checkable, the only kind I trust from this material.## What arrives, and where

Begin with the answer that lays the ground. At 15.9 the questioner asks what is meant by balancing, and the answer describes what the map stands on.

These streamings are then available to the individual who, like the planet, is a web of electromagnetic energy fields with points or nexi of entrance.

Ra, session 15.9 · read it at the source

Read the nouns rather than the meaning. Not vessels, not tanks, not compartments holding a substance, but points of entrance into a field. Places where something arrives. The same answer is explicit that this is a single energy offered under three names, love, light, or intelligent energy, and that blockages are distortions of one thing rather than a collision between several. The verbs stay consistent with that. The material says streaming, streamings and inpouring, and of the fifth centre it says this is the first that reaches outward as well as inward. Calling the third centre yellow is a way of naming a band, and on this account a ray is the direction one energy is moving in on its way through a being.

A single horizontal line, standing for one continuous energy, with seven open circles on it as the points where that energy is taken in, and beneath each circle the colour the corpus names at that point, in the order the corpus states: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. The filled circle is the green, which the material at 85.11 calls the centre of the spectrum. The seventh circle is drawn open and dashed, and that is the load-bearing mark of the diagram, because the only passage in the corpus that enumerates the centres for the purpose of balancing, at 15.12, gives the seventh no colour at all, saying that balanced and imbalanced have no meaning at that level and that it cannot be manipulated the way the others can. Indigo is sixth, so the seventh is the last, and there is no eighth position. Below the line, struck through on their own rows, are the two things the familiar diagram of this material adds and the corpus does not have: a separate centre sitting above the indigo, and seven coloured entities to be climbed. The argument the diagram carries is that a ray is a direction one energy is moving in rather than a presence that receives it, so the colours name bands of a single current, the circles mark where a portion of that current is admitted, and a centre and its colour stay on separate registers because they are related and not identical.

The count, and what the familiar version adds

Here is the checkable part, and it is not the part I expected to write. The corpus says seven. It says so wherever it is asked outright: 17.38, where the sub-planes correspond to the energy influx centres; 48.7, where the centres are already potentiated before birth; 48.10, on the bodies running red through violet; 51.5, where each centre has seven sub-colours, let us say, for convenience; and 54.9, 57.12, 78.31. In 27.17 the questioner offers seven categories of colour and Ra does not correct the number, only remarks how narrow the categories are. The count is not in dispute, and a correction claiming the corpus says six would commit the same error in the other direction. What is in dispute is the seventh position, and here the one passage that enumerates the centres for balancing does something no diagram reproduces.

At 15.12 the material walks the list. Red is first, named after Malkuth, or Earth, in the material’s own words.

The first balancing is of the Malkuth, or Earth, vibratory energy complex, called the red-ray complex.

Orange is the emotional and the personal. Yellow is the solar plexus, and the blockage there resembles most closely what your culture calls ego. Green is the centre of heart. Blue is the one described as reaching outward as well as inward, the first that does. Indigo, it says, is the pineal centre, and the balance of it is what third-density work turns towards. Then it declines to name a colour.

The remaining center of energy influx is simply the total expression of the entity’s vibratory complex of mind, body, and spirit. It is as it will be, “balanced” or “imbalanced” has no meaning at this energy level, for it gives and takes in its own balance.

Ra, session 15.12 · read it at the source

Set that beside the ordering the corpus uses everywhere else and the correction comes clear. Indigo is sixth. The seventh is not a further colour in a series, and the material says so in the strongest terms available: balanced and imbalanced have no meaning at that level, and it cannot be manipulated the way the others can. Two further checks. The word crown is not the corpus’s word for a centre anywhere in the 106 sessions we hold; every appearance of it is the crown of a head, a point in an adept’s exercise, or a symbol in the star imagery. And nothing occupies an eighth position. What fills the gap in the reading most people arrive with is a being.

Where the material warns you about this itself

The entity reading is not stupid. It is the natural reading of a system that talks about centres, says they can be blocked, and calls one of them a gateway, and the material warns against it more than once.

At 54.8 the questioner proposes that disciplining the personality is broken into seven areas, one for each colour of the spectrum. Ra agrees, and then in the same answer says the agreement is precisely the kind of statement that bears being read wrong. It adds what the entity reading never anticipates: the precision with which a centre matches its Original Thought lies not in where the nexus is placed, but in the fluid and plastic blending of the centres through which intelligent energy channels itself. A fixed ladder is not the material’s picture. There is no citation record for that passage, so it is paraphrased rather than quoted, and I would rather say so than paste words we have not logged. At 39.12 the published text even carries a footnote correcting the questioner’s own substitution, the negative pattern’s jump from yellow to blue queried in brackets as indigo. The corpus polices this conflation in its own apparatus.

The picture I would put in the room instead

The following is our reading rather than the material’s, and I mark it as ours.

The best optical analogy available to the material is its own, and the material confirms it. At 33.5 the questioner asks whether it would help to break white light with a prism into its spectrum and screen off everything except the part wanted, passing that through a slit. Ra says this is correct. One light, divided, and a portion admitted, which is what a centre is on this account: a place where one band of one energy is taken in. The bodily records say the same about the lowest ray first, where the red-ray body is identified with the physical and then immediately stripped of shape.

The red-ray body is your chemical body. However, it is not the body which you have as clothing in the physical. It is the unconstructed material of the body, the elemental body without form.

Ra, session 47.8 · read it at the source

Formless material, not a form. And the centre the corpus does most work with is described as light that moulds.

The indigo-ray body which we choose to call the etheric body is, as we have said, the gateway body. In this body form is substance and you may only see this body as that of light as it may mold itself as it desires.

Ra, session 47.8 · read it at the source

You cannot mould a thing. You can only direct a light through a place where something is being made. And the violet, which the diagrams treat as a summit, is described as a channel rather than a resident: at 73.7 every invocation and evocation is drawn through it.

Again, all invocations and evocations are drawn through the violet energy center.

On the Indian reading, and where I part company with it

This library sits inside an Indian setting and I will not walk past the resemblance without saying what we think of it. The pranic and tantric literature describes the same territory and, for most of its history, a different kind of thing. Prana is a current. The cakra in that literature is frequently a wheel, a storehouse, a seat with a presiding quality, and in its developed forms a deity may be placed at the centre. The material’s word is streaming and its picture is of ingress at a point. Those are not the same ontology and cannot be reconciled by adjusting the vocabulary.

So this community takes the material’s side and names the judgment as its own. The ray is a direction of one energy, not a presence, and a reading that turns a direction into a presence has changed the kind of thing under discussion. What the traditions we inherit from specialise in, and leave undeveloped, is the devotional and the personified: they have a rich literature for what it is like to be at a centre, and the Ra Contact has none and no appetite for one. We keep the practice and drop the presence, and a reader who wants the other half should go and read that literature rather than expect it here. That is not a courtesy balance. It is a judgment, and this community holds it.

What it costs to believe it

If a ray is a direction, then my ray is not an identity. It is a description of where a person’s attention has been going, which can change inside a single life and often does. Every piece of spiritual shorthand in circulation that treats the ray as a vocation, a rank, a personality type or a destiny rests on the misreading, and inherits its two worst consequences: that some people stand further along in a fixed order, and that the order is itself the point.

We do not run it that way here. Our sessions do not assign rays, and nobody in this community will tell you which one is yours, for the same reason nobody here will tell you which of your energy centres is blocked. It is not a thing a second party can see, and offering it would claim a discernment on your behalf that the material’s first principle rules out. That refusal is not modesty. It follows from what the ray is.

The material’s answer, asked twice in the same session, is about merging rather than ranking. At 15.14, on the question of how to seek the heart of self, this is what is given.

The understanding, experiencing, accepting, and merging of self with self and with other-self, and finally with the Creator, is the path to the heart of self.

Ra, session 15.14 · read it at the source

Not a stage to be reached. Things to be understood, experienced, accepted and merged. And the heart is where the green ray is described, which is the fourth and not the last. Take the spectrum seriously as a direction and the centre of it is the centre of the diagram, the ladder dissolves, and what a person is becomes a range they are somewhere in rather than a rank they occupy. A direction can be changed by turning. A being cannot be promoted.
