The paradoxes are the content

A reader who has decided this material is evasive is usually reacting to its sentences not closing cleanly, and that reading inverts what the corpus actually does with a paradox, which is hold it as content rather than fail to articulate it.

There is a charge against this material that I have brought myself. It declines to close its sentences. Ask how it knows and it tells you about the veil. Ask the same thing twice and it gives two answers plus an account of why the two were not contradictions. Concluding that the speaker is managing the conversation is reasonable. I concluded it, and filed it as a problem with my reading, not a fact about the text.

It is a fact about the text. The move that shows it is worth making carefully, because the same move is available to any teacher who wants to sound deep.

A paradox is a category here, not a failure

Ask the material what the first event was and it answers with a limitation.

The intelligent infinity discerned a concept. This concept was discerned due to freedom of will of awareness. This concept was finity. This was the first and primal paradox or distortion of the Law of One.

Ra, session 13.12 · read it at the source

Read the last clause. Finity is not a mistake the Creator made and cannot undo. It is given a place in the taxonomy: the first and primal paradox, or distortion. The conjunction does real work. In this material’s usage a distortion is a lawful term for how a creation appears from inside a form that limits it, not a synonym for error. So the condition everything else happens inside of is also the word this corpus uses for what goes wrong. That is a claim about what kind of thing the truth is.

The material applies the word at scale next.

Only up to a very short point. After this point, the many-ness of distortions are equal one to another. The first distortion, free will, finds focus. This is the second distortion known to you as Logos, the Creative Principle or Love. This intelligent energy thus creates a distortion known as Light. From these three distortions come many, many hierarchies of distortions, each having its own paradoxes to be synthesized, no one being more important than another.

Ra, session 15.21 · read it at the source

Two things follow, and the second is load-bearing. Paradox is plural and unranked: every level carries its own, none outranks another. And these are things to be synthesised, which makes them the substance the work is made of rather than a blemish on it. A text that hedges marks the edge of its knowledge. A text that names its own paradoxes describes the shape of what it knows, and hands you the synthesis as a task rather than as a debt.

Hold that frame and an unanswered question in this corpus stops being evidence of an answer being withheld.

Two kinds, and the difference is the whole claim

A paradox that resolves is not a paradox; it is a tension the reader had not yet found the frame for. So each tension below gets named for which it is. A held one is where both statements stand and the corpus supplies no frame. A framed one is an apparent contradiction that folds into a single claim once you find the word doing the damage.

Figure 01

A statement and its contradiction, held as one object

one object, two statementsa best way existsno best way existsas the self knowsnothing is knownand the essay tells them apartheld: neither side withdrawnthe corpus states both and stopsframed: it was only wordingand the two lines were one
The figure draws a paradox as the material draws one: not as two claims standing apart, but as one claim with a division inside it. A single horizontal rule runs the width of the drawing and acts as the diameter of one open circle, and the two halves of the paradox sit on that same rule at the same height, one to the left of the circle and one to the right, with a single filled dot at the exact point where they meet. The left statement reads that a best way of service exists, defined as the constant attempt to share the love of the Creator as the inner self knows it. The right statement reads that nothing at all is known, and that there is no best way and no generalisation. Both are Ra's own words, and both come from one answer, seventeen thirty. The material states the first and then refuses to let it be stated twice, which is a division inside one claim rather than a conflict between two, so the figure puts them on one axis at one level and leaves neither cancelled. Below, under a dividing rule, the essay's second claim: not every tension in the corpus is a paradox of this kind. A held tension is one where both sides stand and the corpus supplies no frame. A framed one is an apparent contradiction that the reader has not yet found the words for, and finding them collapses two claims into one. Which of the two is being looked at has to be said each time, because a paradox that resolves is no longer a paradox, and a tension that has not yet resolved is not yet one.

Two of the three are held; the third is framed, and its frame belongs to the material.

Held: the best way to serve, and the refusal of best ways

The sharpest tension in the corpus has both halves in one answer, to one question about service to others.

The best way of service to others is the constant attempt to seek to share the love of the Creator as it is known to the inner self. This involves self knowledge and the ability to open the self to the other-self without hesitation.

Ra, session 17.30 · read it at the source

Two paragraphs later, in the same answer:

Speaking to the intention of your question, the best way for each seeker in third density to be of service to others is unique to that mind/body/spirit complex. This means that the mind/body/spirit complex must then seek within itself the intelligence of its own discernment as to the way it may best serve other-selves. This will be different for each. There is no best. There is no generalization. Nothing is known.

Ra, session 17.30 · read it at the source

Nothing is withdrawn. The general rule is not qualified into unusability, and the refusal of generalisation is not taken back once the rule is stated. Both stand inside one answer, and the material goes on teaching for the rest of its life. Nothing makes those two sentences one. Held.

The consequence lands on this library first. We are a body of writing that generalises: we take a passage and turn it into a position a reader can hold, several times a month. The material we generalise from says, in one answer, that the general form of the best way to serve does not exist. So either our work is illegitimate or our frame is more particular than we have been honest about. Our reading is the second, and that judgment is ours: the answer puts the work inside each seeker rather than in a rule, not a licence to publish less. The tension is real, and it is not ours to resolve.

Held: the primal paradox, and the machinery that carried it

Free will is what the first quote called the primal paradox. It is also the one thing the material will not take from a being.

I will not suggest the proper series of questions. This is your prerogative as free agent of the Law of One having learn/understood that our social memory complex cannot effectually discern the distortions of the societal mind/body/spirit complex of your peoples.

Ra, session 3.6 · read it at the source

And it is the faculty through which everything the Creator does inside a body actually arrives.

In this process you may see the transdimensional aspect of what you call will, for it is the will, the seeking, the desire of the entity which causes the indigo body to use the novel configuration and to reform the body which exists in space/time.

Ra, session 66.14 · read it at the source

Set the three together. A being of infinite possibility produced finity, and finity is a distortion. But finity is also the only agency through which the Creator’s intention reaches anywhere, a body included. Ra never reconciles these, and shows no sign of wanting to. The vehicle sharpens it: in the material’s own phrase at 8.28, a computer from a remote source of data, quoted at exactly the strength it is given. The agency the Creator cannot see past arrives through a mechanism the same material warns will degrade.

What the material does with that is at 3.14. Asked why a healing machine was built from many blocks rather than made whole, Ra names a law it calls the Law of Confusion, another name for free will, and says the whole was made in thought and then made to appear made, so nobody would be worshipped as its builder. No registered passage exists for that answer, so those words are mine, but the shape is this section in one image: the distortion is the mechanism by which the work is protected from itself.

Framed: the passive practice and the active will

The third is most likely to be mistaken for a paradox, and the corpus supplies the frame.

Each of the two types of meditation is useful for a particular reason. The passive meditation involving the clearing of the mind, the emptying of the mental jumble which is characteristic of mind complex activity among your peoples, is efficacious for those whose goal is to achieve an inner silence as a base from which to listen to the Creator. This is an useful and helpful tool and is by far the most generally useful type of meditation as opposed to contemplation or prayer.

Ra, session 49.8 · read it at the source

Contemplation or the consideration in a meditative state of an inspiring image or text is extremely useful also among your peoples, and the faculty of will called praying is also of a potentially helpful nature. Whether it is indeed an helpful activity depends quite totally upon the intentions and objects of the one who prays.

Ra, session 49.8 · read it at the source

Set those against the will as the faculty that reconfigures. It looks like a contradiction: the most useful practice is to do nothing, and the faculty that does everything is wanting. It is not. Passive describes the mind, emptied of its jumble and ready to listen. It has never described the will, and the material never claimed it did. Find that word and the two lines were always one. Framed. The meditation essay carries the practice; all this adds is why a reader finds the two incompatible.

What the material does at the limit

Two behaviours, and together the real answer to the charge.

At the edge of what it can hold, the response is to step aside and name who it is handing the question to. Asked about the archetypal mind, it declines and asks to hear the observations of whoever is doing the studying.

You must realize that we offered these concepts to you so that you might grow in your own knowledge of the self through the consideration of them. We would prefer, especially for this latter query, to listen to the observations upon this subject which the student of these exercises may make and then suggest further avenues of the refinement of these inquiries. We feel we might be of more aid in this way.

Ra, session 66.21 · read it at the source

That is a refusal which identifies itself and leaves a trail. Concealment is what evasion would have to consist of, and a thing managing the conversation hands you no receipt.

The second is the one I did not expect. The material corrects itself inside the contact. At 73.14, asked whether a working which appears to infringe free will does infringe it, Ra gives an answer whose second half undoes its first, and in the next answer says the previous one was incorrect. Neither has a registered record, so both are given in my own words, but the correction was made in the channel rather than left standing in the printed text. The transcript essay treats that record as material. What I claim here is narrower, and it is about method.

Where this library parts company with Advaita

The obvious framework for an essay about paradox is Advaita, and taking it seriously means disagreeing.

Advaita holds the many to be a category error and apparent contradiction to belong to the relative level, where it dissolves. Every paradox it is given is solved by the single move of showing the level was wrong. This material has no such move. Plurality here is real, chosen, and without an ending, so a tension inside it is a feature of the structure rather than a shadow our partial view casts on it. The material is explicit that resolution is a property of unity and not of any resource in third density, and at 97.9 that the archetypal mind resolves no paradox and brings nothing into unity. Both are paraphrases, not registered passages.

We take the material’s side, and the judgment is ours. Advaita is not wrong inside its own question. What it specialises in is the dissolution of apparent plurality, and it leaves the work of the many undeveloped. A world in which every portion of infinity creates a universe, and free choice makes each one different, is not a problem Advaita has solved. It is a world Advaita does not describe. That is an addition rather than a correction, and it is why this essay sits with advaita rather than inside it.

What it changes for you

A reader who has learned to take a paradox as content has a different relationship with every unanswered question in the corpus. Such a question stops being a withheld answer and becomes possibly the shape of an answer, which is a different thing to sit with for years.

The reading can also be abused, and should be named so. It is a paradox is the most flattering sentence available to a teacher with a disciple in front of them, because it converts the teacher’s failure into depth and the disciple’s confusion into rigour. This corpus resists the move unusually well: it says plainly when something is held and when something is framed, and corrects itself when it overreaches. Our discipline is narrow and we would hold it against any teacher, including ourselves: for each tension, say which it is; where the material gives no frame, say so. Do not supply the frame yourself and call the result the paradox’s depth.

So the corpus is not evasive. It is particular, and particularity is hard to quote. That is a different fault from the one it was charged with, and it is the one we have to work with.
