The grammar of a session

A session transcript is not a book of answers. The question and the answer are one designed unit, and nearly every mistake a reader makes with this material comes from reading the second half of it and skipping the first.

You have the transcript open. Somewhere in eighty-odd numbered exchanges there is a passage that settles the thing you came for, and the sensible plan is to find it, read it, and close the file. That plan is where most readers of this material go wrong, and it fails quietly, because the answers are there and they do read as authoritative. What you are skipping is the other half of the unit that produced them.

The Ra Contact is not a book of aphorisms with a question-and-answer format imposed on it. The format is the argument. Question and answer were built together, and reading the corpus properly means reading the question as carefully as the answer — every time, and most of all on the occasions when the answer seems to have wandered off somewhere. Our shorter method essay covers the notebook habit; this one is about the shape of the exchange.

The instrument says this about itself

This is not a reading we have laid on the text. In the thirteenth session, turned back to a question it believed it had already answered, the contact says:

We may have misperceived your query. We were under the distortion/impression that we had responded to this particular query. Would you restate the query?

Ra, session 13.14 · read it at the source

We may have misperceived your query. Not: the question was badly framed. Not: we decline to answer. The answer had been generated from an understanding of the query, and that understanding was admitted to be fallible. So the answer is a function of how the question was understood, not only of what was asked. That is the whole method in one line, in the material’s own words, and it is why the transcripts record these moments instead of editing them out.

It is also why the same question, asked by two people in two sessions, gets two different answers without the corpus contradicting itself. Each answer was addressed to the one who asked. Hold that, and much apparent inconsistency here stops being a defect and becomes the design.

Four things an answer turns out to be

Read the question first and an answer stops being a delivery and becomes a move. There are four. They do not rank, and none of them is a failure.

A single question as it appears in a session transcript, with four arrows leaving it and landing on four things the answer turned out to be. The four branches are drawn at the same weight, with the same open circle and the same two lines of type, because the argument is that none of them is a failure and a hierarchy would put back the misreading the essay is trying to remove: a redirection turns a general question back into the questioner's own situation; a hedge is not vagueness but a precision about where the answerer actually stands, and the corpus hedges deliberately; a non-answer states its reason, and the reason is that the student is to enlighten itself rather than be handed material; and a direct answer is rare, and when it comes it carries a condition and a release. Beneath the branching runs a single rule, and the rule is written on it: the answer is addressed to the person asking, so what varies between two sessions is not the question but the questioner.

A redirection turns the question back toward the questioner’s own situation. The material does this constantly, in a recognisable shape: a general question about what is true receives an answer about what is true for you, here, in the state you have just described. A reader expecting a rule gets a mirror and concludes the material is evasive. What happened is that the general case was never what was asked.

A hedge is not vagueness. It is a precision about where the answerer actually stands, and the corpus has a hedge vocabulary worth learning. Asked about timing, it gives two answers that do not match in register, each exact about a different thing.

The harvest is now. There is not at this time any reason to include efforts along these distortions towards longevity, but rather to encourage distortions toward seeking the heart of self, for this which resides clearly in the violet-ray energy field will determine the harvesting of each mind/body/spirit complex.

This is an approximation. We have stated we have difficulty with your time/space. This is an appropriate probable/possible time/space nexus for harvest. Those who are not in incarnation at this time will be included in the harvest.

The first collapses the horizon; the second marks the limit of the instrument, which does not have your units. This is an approximation is not a failure of knowledge. It is the answerer declining to be more precise than it is entitled to be, and a source’s own uncertainty is part of the source. Tighten either hedge and the library becomes surer than its source, which is the quietest way to make a text look better than it is.

A genuine non-answer comes with its reason attached, and the reason is usually a better find than the answer would have been. Asked to go on refining a line of inquiry, the material says:

You must realize that we offered these concepts to you so that you might grow in your own knowledge of the self through the consideration of them. We would prefer, especially for this latter query, to listen to the observations upon this subject which the student of these exercises may make and then suggest further avenues of the refinement of these inquiries. We feel we might be of more aid in this way.

Ra, session 66.21 · read it at the source

The concepts were offered so that a person could grow through considering them. What is on offer afterwards is not more material but the student’s own observation, worth more to them than a seventh elaboration from us. That is also the answer to any expectation that this corpus is a fixed point to be completed: the text stops refining on purpose and hands the work back.

A direct answer is rare, and when it comes it carries a condition and a release with it, which is what a direct answer looks like in this material.

The stimulus for this is the faculty of the will. If the will of yellow-ray mind/body/spirit is that which is stronger than the progressive impetus of the physical death towards realization of that which comes, that is, if the will is concentrated enough upon the previous experience, the entity’s shell of yellow ray, though no longer activated, cannot either be completely deactivated and, until the will is released, the mind/body/spirit complex is caught.

Ra, session 47.13 · read it at the source

A mechanism, stated plainly, with the thing that triggers it and the moment it lets go. Nothing hedged, nothing deferred. Knowing which few of these exist keeps their scarcity from being read as the material’s general character.

The instrument was not in good shape throughout

The grammar is a designed constraint rather than a script, and part of the reason is that the answerer was under a real limit. Asked in the twelfth session to measure how far its symbols had slipped, the contact states the cost:

Do not concern yourselves overly with this in the space/time nexus present, but do not allow these distortions to remain over a long period or the contact will be gradually impaired.

Ra, session 12.33 · read it at the source

That is a physical fact about a degrading channel, stated once and without ceremony. The later sessions are therefore not a better-tuned version of the early ones. Answers change in character across the corpus and not only across questioners, and a reader expecting one voice throughout will find variance, and call it incoherence.

Why the grammar is built this way

The material’s own account of the design runs through its first distortion. Free will comes first in the sequence, and the others follow out of it.

Only up to a very short point. After this point, the many-ness of distortions are equal one to another. The first distortion, free will, finds focus. This is the second distortion known to you as Logos, the Creative Principle or Love. This intelligent energy thus creates a distortion known as Light. From these three distortions come many, many hierarchies of distortions, each having its own paradoxes to be synthesized, no one being more important than another.

Ra, session 15.21 · read it at the source

The operative sentence is in the third session, and it is the shortest statement of the whole method:

I will not suggest the proper series of questions. This is your prerogative as free agent of the Law of One having learn/understood that our social memory complex cannot effectually discern the distortions of the societal mind/body/spirit complex of your peoples.

Ra, session 3.6 · read it at the source

Choosing the questions belongs to the asker. A form in which the asker supplies the question and the answerer answers that one is built to leave free will intact, and it is why this corpus is a set of conversations rather than a body of doctrine. The requirement underneath is the faculty the method exists to develop rather than replace.

It is necessary that each being use free and complete discernment from within the all-self which is at the heart of the mind/body/spirit complex.

Ra, session 12.10 · read it at the source

From within. Not from outside the complex, and not from a book. Which is why the material declines to hand a person the conclusion about their own life:

It is important to allow each seeker to enlighten itself rather than for any messenger to attempt in language to teach/learn for the entity, thus being teach/learner and learn/teacher.

Ra, session 15.13 · read it at the source

And it is why an answer that lands as experience rather than as information is not a failure of precision. It is the method working.

A state is not a stage

This next point is ours rather than the material’s, and it comes from the outside map this essay reasons with, integral theory. Its most quoted rule is that a state is not a stage: waking, dreaming, and the powerful absorbed conditions all come and go, and nothing about the force of one brings the structure that would hold it into being.

Applied to a transcript, that is a beginner’s real risk. The felt force of a session is a state. Reading well enough to find your way back to it, and to explain it to someone else a year later, is a stage. The first arrives whether or not you are prepared for it, and is the one most easily mistaken for progress. The material’s account of the work that does change the structure is blunter:

To begin to master the concept of mental discipline it is necessary to examine the self. The polarity of your dimension must be internalized. Where you find patience within your mind you must consciously find the corresponding impatience and vice versa. Each thought that a being has, has in its turn an antithesis.

Ra, session 5.2 · read it at the source

And its instruction on taking up a discipline at all is the same instruction in another key:

It is well to investigate each discipline, not as a dilettante, but as one who seeks the touchstone, one who wishes to feel the pull of the magnet.

Ra, session 76.9 · read it at the source

The pull, not the collection. A reader who accumulates passages has a shelf.

The two corpora this library does not quote

Everything above concerns the Ra material, which this site quotes exactly, because precision is the whole point of a primary source. The library is also written from two other corpora, and it should be plain what may be done with each.

The first is our own facilitator’s teaching, in our own community’s group conversation. It may inform an essay, and where his argument matters it may be published — rewritten into this register rather than reproduced. Nothing from it is quoted and no one from the group is named; that part protects the people who spoke, not him.

The second is a different study group our facilitator belongs to rather than authors. Almost all of it is one named teacher’s writing, published under his own name, which makes it a copyright and consent question rather than a privacy one. We hold no record of his permission. The rule is short: read it for concepts, do not quote it, name no one. An essay seeded from it says in its own provenance line that the reading is ours.

The two registers are deliberately opposite, and the difference is the point. A study library holding a sacred-space charter has to be able to say this may be quoted, this may only inform, and here is the reason — or the charter is decoration. Ours is not a research archive pretending to be neutral. It is a community that must publish what it thinks in its own voice and still be honest about whose words it stands on.

A reader who arrived expecting a ritual, because an older page of this site sent them this way, will not find one, and will not find one later. Nothing was withheld by accident. The material’s position on handing a technique to a stranger is set out at length in the discipline behind magic; the short of it is the requirement above. What this library owes a reader is the difference between a thing it has not published and a thing it does not have.

Read the question first

The method fits in a habit. Before you decide whether an answer in this corpus was helpful, find the question it was answering, and ask what that question was really asking for — because on the material’s own account the answer you are holding was generated from someone’s understanding of it, and that understanding could be wrong.

Then read the answer again. It will very likely make more sense than it did a minute ago, and for a reason you can now state rather than guess at. The answer was not addressed to the topic. It was addressed to the person who asked.
